TUITION REIMBURSEMENT IN THE CASE OF A LAYOFF

In the event of an indefinite layoff, employees are provided with a maximum amount of $8,400 tuition reimbursement through the IUEP Program. Employees are given an account from which tuition amounts can be paid from as long as they have recall rights. Seniority as of the last day worked determines the amount employees are entitled to:

SENIORITY AS OF DATE OF LAYOFF

1 to 3 years $6,400

3 to 4 years $7,400

4 or more years $8,400

Tuition assistance shall not exceed $4,600 in a calendar year and cannot exceed $8,400 in any four year period-based on calendar years. If an employee takes a job that offers a similar program or a job that pays comparably to General Motors, that employee will no longer be eligible for the program.

Example: Jane Doe has five years seniority and is attending college during layoff. Her Spring 2006 tuition is $500. Her tuition account balance is $7,900 but she can only use $4,100 for the remainder of that calendar year. By December 31, 2006, Jane has exhausted $1,500 tuition reimbursement. Her account balance is $6,900. In 2007, she has $4,600 available for tuition. If she uses the entire amount in 2007, she will still have $2,300 available for 2008. Keep in mind that our current contract expires in 2007, and this may change.

Employees on lay-off are eligible to take classes that will improve their chances for reemployment but active employees may only take classes that enhance their opportunity for advancement within the General Motors environment.

You must notify ODJFS if you are attending school while claiming benefits.

You will be interviewed about your availability for work. Although individuals generally are not eligible for benefits while attending school full-time, the law contains the following provisions that may permit you to collect benefits while in school.

* If you were attending school while working and continue school after becoming unemployed, you may be considered available for work while in school; or
* If you enroll in a training course approved by ODJFS and make satisfactory progress.
